You can now fly direct to around a dozen airports in Germany. Low-cost airlines EasyJet and Ryanair both offer a choice of destinations throughout the country. You will also find a choice of routes with budget airlines like Air Berlin and Jet2.com. The number of flights peaks in the summer, when seasonal routes operate to the German capital Berlin. There are daily departures all year round to the major cities. The widest choice of routes is available from London but you should also find low-cost and budget options from regional UK airports. Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL)

The most important airport in Berlin but due to close in 2013 when the new Berlin-Brandenburg Airport opens. 8km from the city centre.

Berlin Schonefeld Airport (SXF)

The main entry point for low-cost flights from the UK. 18km from the city centre. The airport will become merged into the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)

The new Brandenburg Airport will replace the existing Schonefeld Airport. Berlin Tegel Airport will then close. All flights from the UK that presently fly to Schonefeld or Tegel will fly to Berlin Brandenburg.

Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport (FKB)

Small regional airport in the Baden-Wurttemburg region of Germany, close to the border with France. 25km from Baden-Baden. A useful gateway to the Black Forest. Also handy for the city of Karlsruhe.

Bremen Airport (BRE)

Small regional airport located 4km from the city of Bremen.

Cologne Airport (CGN)

Useful entry point for cruise holidays on the River Rhine. The airport is 16km from Cologne. Also an economical way to reach the former West German capital of Bonn.

Dortmund Airport (DTM)

10km from Dortmund.

Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS)

7km from Düsseldorf and 20 kilometres from Essen.

Düsseldorf Weeze Airport (NRN)

Located in the Lower Rhine region, around 33km southeast of Nijmegen in the Netherlands, and 48km northwest of Duisburg in Germany. A cheap route into the attractive Lower Rhineland region between Germany and Holland.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

12km from Frankfurt.

Frankfurt Hahn Airport (HHN)

About 120km from the city of Frankfurt. It is about the same distance from Luxembourg. The cities of Koblenz (70km) and Mainz (90km) are closer.

Friedrichshafen Airport (FDH)

Superb location on Lake Constance, in southern Germany. The airport is close to magnificent scenery on the borders with Austria and Switzerland. Ski season flights.

Hamburg Airport (HAM)

9km from Hamburg.

Munich Airport (MUC)

29km from Munich. Also a gateway to the scenic region of Bavaria and top ski resorts in Germany and Austria. Nearby resorts include Ellmau, Zell am Ziller and Mayrhofen.
