Boeing 767 - A mid-sized jet
The Boeing 767 is a mid-size jet, a favorite of American Airlines and Delta Airlines, Air Canada, and Air Nippon (Japan). The 767 is a close relation to the Boeing 757. The difference is mainly in the body: the Boeing 757 is a narrow-bodied jet, while the 767 is wide-bodied.
The 767 was originally considered overdone because its large wingspan provided greater range and a bigger size than customers wanted. However, they quickly came to realize that the difference in fuel use was negligible, and the large wings more than paid for themselves in terms of stability in takeoff and landing situations. The 767’s unique body size and shape mean that customers receive faster service and can enter and exit the plane more quickly. On the downside, it does reduce cargo space.
Boeing 767 - History and use
The Boeing 767 was a very popular plane in the late eighties and late nineties. Although nearly a thousand remain in use, recent sales have plummeted. There are several reasons for this, including increased competition from Airbus, an economic recession for airlines, and the Boeing 787, which directly competes with its own product. The Boeing 767 launched in September of 1981 and in over nearly 30 years of service has only witnessed a total of eight accidents.
Boeing 767 - A popular, efficient, and successful aircraft
In spite of its checkered history, the Boeing 767 remains a popular, efficient, and successful aircraft. Even with the new competition and financial struggles, it’s sure to be around for a long time yet to come.
