The airline's origins date back to 1926, starting life as Deutsche Luft Hansa Aktiengesellschaft and continued expansion has seen it become the world's sixth largest airline and the national flagship carrier of Germany. Privately owned, continued steady growth has seen Lufthansa carry out many acquisitions and investment in a number of other airlines such as the UK airline BMI, low cost carriers Eurowings and Condor and Swiss International Air Lines. The company is headquartered in Cologne, Germany with its main hub at Frankfurt International Airport.

The Lufthansa network is extremely extensive with 200 destinations served in over 100 countries and as part of the Star Alliance code share consortium, offers ticketing to over 400 routes in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia and North and South America. Its fleet size is just as impressive with almost 400 aircraft and employs a combined total of 100,000 staff. Lufthansa has departures from most UK airports including Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Belfast as well as London Heathrow and City airports with seasonal departures from Jersey and Newquay scheduled for 2008.
