The airline's origins date back to 1926, starting life as Deutsche Luft Hansa Aktiengesellschaft and continued expansion has seen it become the world's sixth largest airline and the national flagship carrier of Germany. Privately owned, continued steady growth has seen Lufthansa carry out many acquisitions and investment in a number of other airlines such as the UK airline BMI, low cost carriers Eurowings and Condor and Swiss International Air Lines.
