How to make flying with young children easier

Some tips on flying with children
We all know the difficulties that can arise when travelling or flying with young children. Whether you're travelling for the first time with kids, or you've had plenty of experience, here are a few tips to help you have the most relaxed trip you can.

Travelling with young children - easing the pressure
Young children feel the change in air pressure in the cabin much more acutely than adults, and with a few the pain can be considerable. Don't worry however, because, bringing with you some hard or boiled sweets is usually enough to cope with the pain. Sucking on the sweets helps to equalise the pressure in the ear and can stop young children from feeling the pain as acutely. However, if you know that your children do suffer significant amounts of pain on flights, it is always best to visit your GP who will be able to offer you sound medical advice, and suggestions for dealing with the pain.

Keeping young children happy on flights - loosen the television rules
A long flight, to somewhere like Orlando, can be a nightmare if your children find themselves bored. By easing the rules they usually have on television and computer games you can keep them distracted on the longer flights. Long-haul flights abound with free movies and computer games, and allowing your young children the freedom to get lost in either can be a great way to stop them getting bored.

Holiday flights and young children - find the right carrier
Wherever possible choose a carrier with suitable child friendly facilities. Some flight companies offer you the chance to have a cot, or a specific seat for children. Fly with these carriers whenever your budget allows, and make sure you enquire with the carrier about all the help available to you and your young family. After all that magical holiday to Thailand will be all the more relaxing if you get there stress and hassle free.

Young children and flying - keep them tired
If you're worried about your young children getting restless on long flights, then try flying when they are tired or ready to sleep. Flying outside of their normal sleep pattern can mean they fall asleep once on the flight, giving you the chance to relax a little.

Make the most of your flight time - have a quiet activity to hand
If your kids love colouring, puzzle books or games then try giving them a treat and keep them distracted whilst flying. There's never a bad time to get a present and kids can quite often lose themselves and be absorbed by a great new quiet activity, like that new colouring book they've been asking you for.

Getting young kids from A to B - share the load
Whenever you can, ask for help. If you are struggling to keep your young children busy then try involving others. A friendly face on the flight, a calm flight attendant or neighbour may be willing to help by offering a hand with any difficulty you're having. Never be afraid to ask for help moving luggage or with drinks from cabin crew or whatever else comes up.
