Boeing 757 - Since 1983
Although the last model of the Boeing 757 entered service with Shanghai Airlines in November of 2005, over 1,000 of these aircraft remain in use. They are short to medium range commercial aircrafts, active since 1983.

Boeing 757 History
Boeing designed the 757 to replace their 727 models. The 757 was not Boeing’s most successful model, although it had great potential for heavy domestic routes. Despite showing initial financial success, many considered the 757 too ambitious and too large for its purpose, and eventually Boeing decided that the newest Boeing 737 model, the 737-900ER, would be a suitable replacement for the 757.

Boeing 757 - Current Uses
More than half of the 757s active today are used by American carriers. It is also a frequent holiday/charter plane for UK airlines. British Airways also uses the 757 for short flights, such as London to Manchester, while others use it for intercontinental and transatlantic routes. In other words, the 757 may not have been Boeing’s most successful endeavour, but it certainly demonstrates versatility!

Boeing 757 - Interesting Facts
The Boeing 757 has a number of unique and interesting features. Some of the more intriguing facts include:

• Designers initially intended the 757 for hot and high climates, such as Mexico City

• The 757 produces incredibly strong wake turbulence. In fact, the FAA requires more space between the 757 and other aircraft than it does for any other model.

• One jet costs upwards of $80 million US.

• American Senator John Kerry chartered a 757 (nicknamed Freedom Bird) as his campaign jet during the 2004 American presidential elections.

• Three 757s have been sold as private aircraft: one to Ronald Burkle, a supermarket success, and two to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
